fabric monster

o I was introduced to a magical material that allows one to iron fabrics to each other! No sewing! My friend Corrina showed me the stuff, i guess it's a common seamstress thing but i had never heard of it. I have wanted to make wall hangings for years, but was always discouraged by the need to sew everything on. Remember that Okami wall hanging i made from felt? The one that took me for-fucking-ever? I may have to do a new one that kicks that one's ass.

This actually took me a long time to put together, I spent pretty much this entire day working on him. It still needs some little minor detailing and I'd like to sew in some little thread accents ( or not, i don't know). It also needs to be trimmed and a dowel is needed for proper hanging. BUT I REALLY LIKE THIS!!!!

The fabric i used is actually kind of shiny and has a cool texture. You can't really tell how much work went into this since i had to use my iphone to take photos as my our of town boyfriend borrowed by camera. It's really clean and looks like a big flag...has that same wieght and texture. My first attempt from last night is pretty bad but im really glad i didn't give up on this method and tried again. All the pieces STAY on! They are like....melted to each other, it is so cool looking.

Makes for a cool curtain! Pinned up over a window....those are piles of dirty laundry.

Now that i understand what to do ( and what not to do) im hoping to make more of these with more detail and color depth...im sort of limited to what they have at the store in this material and i didnt want to buy up thirty different colors at $4 a yard but i think this is awesome. I just wish i had better photos :C

Taxidermy werewolf head progress

The eyes look so much better set in the face. My roommate said it looks like the wolf from Neverending Story...it totally does!! Alot more needs to be done, longer fur in parts, lips need work, ears suck...but it's getting there. I'm just happy it's coming together.

More progress on the werewolf head!

there are a few more photos in my flickr account :)

Painted the glass eyes myself.

more art!

i have been working on a pendant to be cast in silver. Click to see the whole image if it gets cut off...

The sculpey version:
silver pendant sculpt

And the wax copy:
wax cast

Made to come apart to be cast in silver, then welded:
wax cast2

So that's fun. I have been wanting to get back into silver stuff for years but i dont have the space for the equipment. I found a pro jeweller willing to make this stuff into silver so that solves that issue! He's very nice and does good work, im very glad he's down with doing this for me!

The werewolf head is coming along! I added sculpey parts ( the grey and pink) and will bake them with a hairdryer or heat gun since foam doesnt do well in ovens. I will also add painted glass eyes as soon as the blanks arrive in the mail. The the final part will be adding fake fur!

New monster project!

I just finished the werewolf costume, go check it out! werewolf blog!

And in other news now that the costume is out of the way and a major project is wrapping up, i'll be posting here more. So here's a new thing im working on!

I cheated and used a taxidermy bear head. Cut off the nose, lips and made the eyes bigger. Not sure where im going with it but it's going to be cool. I hope. i just want a life size monster on my wall, fur and everything. Carving foam with a dremel is fun..slices so quickly!

etched copper dragon

Did an expirament and managed to etch some metal! I have always admired the steampunk brass etchings but never wanted to fiddle with electricity, it freaks me out. Mine are not nearly as good as his but it's a start. I didnt want to rip him off either so im glad mine isnt identical to the steampunk method.
It didnt put much effort into this first try, as I wasnt sure if my material would work and didnt want to waste time on something super detailed or large. I'll probably try out some jewelry or maybe just work larger and hang the metal right on the wall. I'd love to do some journal covers but again, I don't want to step on any steampunk toes.

Oh and here's the steampunk etching page! Pretty awesome! Click for the Steampunk Workshop...

And here is mine! It will get better with every attempt but for now im excited to have a new material to dink around with. Yay!
